From the perspective of therapeutic shamanism each of us individually is made up of different parts of self. These parts of us both reflect, and are aspects of, the different shamanic realms. Each part has different wants and needs.
In the upperworld, we have our Upperworld Self. This is our ‘spirit’ or ‘higher self’. This aspect of us is both a part of us individually, and a spark of Father Sun. As such it needs to live a life that has a connection to spirit, and a life that is ethical and compassionate in terms of ‘right speech’, ‘right livelihood’, ‘right action’ and so on.
In the lowerworld, we have our Lowerworld Self. This is our authentic soul, which is both a part of us individually, and a part of Mother Earth and the interconnected web of all life. This part of us needs to live a life that is true to what mother earth created us to be - an animal amongst the other animals and with a rightful place in the world; a wild and free human being living in and on the world; a hunter and a gatherer.
In the middleworld we have two different parts. These are: the Body, and our Middleworld Self. The Body needs: healthy food, water, warmth, air, and to be physically safe. Obviously when these needs are not being met then it will become sick or injured and even die. When it is in physical danger, or perceives itself to be, then it can go into shock. This body shock can persist for years and even decades after an event, leading to a whole host of problems not just physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually too. Healing body-shock is dealt with on various therapeutic shamanism courses, including the extended Soul Retrieval course.
The Middleworld Self is our ‘self identity’ or ego. This part of us is comprised of the stories and beliefs that we have told ourselves in our middleworld life, or been told by others and which we have taken on board. It is the stories about who we are and what we believe; what kind of a person we are and how we have to act. This part of us is itself comprised of two parts: the Head, and the Heart. The Head need to understand and feel understood, and the Heart need to love and feel loved.
The problem is the Head. In its effort to feel understood, and to understand the world, the Head makes up stories and theories.
