The Three Ravens College of Therapeutic Shamanism UK

The  Therapeutic Shamanism Online In-Depth Courses

If you have already done the college’s First-Steps course and at least one of the Next-Step courses, and are ready to take the plunge to dive deeper into exploring Therapeutic Shamanism, then the In-Depth courses may be for you.

The In-Depth courses differ from the First and Next-Step ones in a number of significant ways:-

Community

The First and Next-Step courses focus mainly on relatively short online sessions, and then participants practicing by themselves and in their own time between the sessions. In that way, aside from an hour or two online each week, they are a relatively solitary way of learning. However, hunter-gatherer shamans often spent significant amounts of time on their own practicing their skills (and in this way, often lived somewhat on the margins of the tribe), they were not hermits. This is because shamanism is not just a solitary, individualistic spiritual path. Rather, shamans spend time alone in order to to gain knowledge and skills, so that they can return to community and be of service. That is the role of the shaman. That is what shamanism is really about. On the In-Depth courses then, we begin to address this aspect of working for, and with, other people.

What this means in practice is that we spend time on the In-Depth courses actively working together as a community, journeying together, sharing our experiences, and giving shamanic healing to other course members. It also means being open about our own wounds in order to receive healing too, for we best learn how to heal others by working on healing our own wounds too.

Working at Psychological Depth

Creating an environment where this depth of learning and healing can take place means paying attention not just to the shamanic aspects of the work, but to the interpersonal skills and dynamics too. Because of this, the In-Depth courses include a lot more focus on the psychotherapeutic aspects of Therapeutic Shamanism. This includes sessions on developing interpersonal skills, understanding psychological processes, working with parts-of-self, and so on, alongside the more “traditional” shamanic aspects of the work.

It means having course participants who want to work at this level and in this way, and who are able to do so (and for that reason, as tutors we are selective about who we accept onto these courses).

Longer Sessions

All this means the In-Depth courses need more online time working together. With the old face-to-face courses, this usually meant spending a weekend together - about 12 hours of actual teaching time - usually at two monthly intervals. The online In-Depth courses are based on a similar amount of teaching time, but rather than spending a whole weekend on Zoom (which most people find torturous) the teaching is delivered in shorter, more frequent sessions. See the individual courses for details.

Entry requirements

To be accepted on the in-Depth courses you must have done the college’s First-Step course and at least one of the Next-Step courses first.

We regularly get enquiries from people who have trained in shamanism elsewhere and who want to go straight onto the In-Depth courses. Experience has shown us though that this rarely works out. There are a number of reasons for this…

  1. Our First and Next-Step courses contain skills and information that is not part of other shamanic training - things that are essential to know before being able to successfully take part in the In-Depth courses.
  2. There are many very different approaches to shamanism, and some very different shamanic teachers too, with very different approaches to teaching. Given this, it is vital that people take their time to thoroughly check out if the Therapeutic Shamanism approach is right for them, and that we are the right kind of teachers for them, before committing to the In-Depth work.
  3. The work we do on the In-Depth courses is deep, and needs a safe environment for students. As tutors, this means we need to be discerning about who we let onto the courses, and so we need to take our time getting to know students before letting them book onto the In-Depth work.
